THERMOCOUPLES

A thermocouple is a sensor specifically designed for measuring temperature, consisting of two dissimilar metals joined at one end. When the junction of these metals experiences a change in temperature, a voltage is generated, which can be interpreted by a temperature controller, high-limit device, or display unit.

Common Constructions

1. Tube and Wire Construction:
   • This type utilizes an empty stainless steel tube with a wire running inside. The welded tip at the end incorporates the wire junction, making it suitable for temperatures up to 480ºC.
   • Ideal for applications requiring moderate temperature sensing.
2. Mineral Insulated Construction:
   • This construction features a highly compacted stainless steel sheath containing solid conductors encased in magnesium oxide insulation.
   • It allows for a wider variety of diameters and enables bending of the sensors in the field, accommodating temperatures up to 1200ºC.
   • This design is particularly advantageous for high-temperature applications where flexibility is needed.
